A few years ago I came across a fascinating list of approximately 7,000 languages spoken in the world. I noticed that many languages start with letter "M" (843). When I studied the list in more detail, it turned out that even 391 languages start with the letters 'MA'.
What does this mean? I suspect that this question is related to the origin of language, referring to the ancient family tree from which all languages originated.
In linguistics there are many interesting thoughts about this that I cannot grasp without intensive study. For the time being I am satisfied with the term 'language families' and the search for relationships between world languages. The fact that there are 391 languages that start with 'MA' must have something to do with this.
I‘ve chosen four languages from this list for the series: Mandarin, Malayalam, Maithili and Malagasy, such as the languages are called in English.
Many people know Mandarin as the official language of China, or standard Chinese. The word "mandarin" actually means high official from the time of the Chinese dynasties. It was the Jesuits who gave the name to the language in the 16th century. Mandarin is the native language of around 845 million people, but it is becoming worldwide spoken by more than 1,300 million people. It is the language that most people speak in the world.
The word 'Malayalam' struck me because it is a palindrome. Malayalam is the official language from the southwestern Indian state of Kerala. It has its own script and is spoken by 36 million people.
The Maithili language is spoken by approximately 35 million people, especially in the state of Bihar in the eastern part of India and in the Terai region of Nepal. It has the letter image word three 'i-s' in contrast to the other three languages in this series.
Malagasy is the official language of Madagascar, an island on the southeast coast of Africa. The residents of Madagascar are also called Malagasy; about 14 million people speak the language. Madagascar was a French colony; Europeans on the island have gave the name 'Madagascar', under this name it appears in the logs of Marco Polo for. But long before that time, about 2000 years ago, the first inhabitants came to the island from the east of Africa and the Indonesian archipelago. Therefore it’s not surprising that the 'Malagasy' language is not related to African languages, but to the Austronesian languages, such as Indonesian, Malaysian or Filipino.
I’m not familiar with the sound of these languages, but I suspect it might have an Indonesian tone of voice.

Een paar jaar geleden kwam ik in een boek een fascinerende lijst tegen met ongeveer 7000 talen die er over de wereld gesproken worden. Het viel mij op dat vele talen beginnen met letter 'M' (843). Toen ik de lijst nader bestudeerde, bleek dat zelfs 391 talen beginnen met de letters 'MA'.
Wat zou dit betekenen? Ik vermoed dat deze vraag samenhangt over de oorsprong van taal, het zou kunnen verwijzen naar een oertaal, de stamboom van waaruit alle talen zijn ontstaan. In de linguistiek zijn er vele interessante gedachten hierover die ik niet kan vatten zonder intensieve studie. Voorlopig heb ik genoeg aan het begrip 'taalfamilies' en het zoeken naar verwantschappen tussen wereldtalen. Het feit dat er 391 talen bestaan die met 'MA' beginnen moet hier op een of andere manier mee te maken hebben. Uit deze lijst heb ik vier talen gekozen voor de serie 'Sisters': Mandarin, Malayalam, Maithili en Malagasy, zoals de talen heten in het Engels. Hieronder iets over deze talen.
Mandarin kennen veel mensen als de officiële taal van China, of standaard chinees. Het woord 'mandarin' betekent eigenlijk hoge ambtenaar uit de tijd van de Chinese dynastieën. Het waren de Jezuïeten geweest die in de 16e eeuw de naam gaven aan de taal. Het Mandarijn is de moedertaal van ongeveer 845 miljoen mensen, maar wereldwijd wordt het door meer dan 1.300 miljoen mensen gesproken. Het is de taal die de meeste mensen op de wereld spreken.
Het woord 'Malayalam' viel mij op omdat het een palindroom is. Malayalam is de officiële taal van de zuidwestelijke Indiase staat Kerala. Het heeft een eigen schrift en wordt gesproken door 36 miljoen mensen.
De taal Maithili wordt door ongeveer 35 miljoen mensen gesproken, vooral in de staat Bihar in het oostelijk gedeelte van India en in de regio Terai van Nepal. Als letterbeeld heeft het woord drie 'i-s' in tegenstelling tot de andere drie talen uit deze serie.
Malagasy is de officiële taal van Madagaskar, een eiland aan de Zuidoost kust van Afrika. De inwoners van Madagaskar heten ook Malagasy; er spreken ongeveer 14 miljoen mensen de taal. Madagaskar was een Franse kolonie; het zijn Europeanen geweest die het eiland de naam 'Madagaskar' hebben gegeven, onder deze naam komt het in de logboeken van Marco Polo voor. Maar lang voor die tijd, zo'n 2000 jaar geleden, kwamen de eerste inwoners naar het eiland vanuit het oosten van Afrika en de Indonesische archipel. Het is dan ook niet verrassend dat 'Malagasy' als taal niet aan Afrikaanse talen verwant is, maar tot de Austronesische talen familie hoort, zoals Indonesisch, Maleisisch of Filippijns.
Hoe deze drie talen klinken weet ik niet, maar ik heb zo'n vermoeden dat het Indonesisch, een taal die ik wel spreek en veel Sanskriet leenwoorden kent, er doorheen klinkt.
